<Arts Talk>A Grand Judgment in the Wine World
There is no shortage of legendary wineries and stories in the wine world. Today I want to talk about a milestone event of a myth-disillusioned "big reversal" - the Judgment of Paris.
For quite a long time in the 20th century, it was generally believed that French wine was a well-deserved big brother. Against this background, on May 24, 1976, a wealthy British businessman named Steven Spurrier organized a blind tasting contest between French wines and American wines, and invited eleven judges, all of whom were basically French in the wine industry. Almost everyone in this blind tasting tacitly believed that American wines were "self-inflicted humiliation" and that the competition was just a formality. The competition is divided into red and white groups. The red wine is mainly brewed with Cabernet Sauvignon, and the white wine is all brewed with Chardonnay. The well-known French wines and the jury composed of French people were supposed to be a tasting meeting with a certain chance of winning, but the result was beyond everyone's expectations. Chateau Montelena is way ahead of the whites, and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is the reds, both of which are American wines. This result was unacceptable to the French, but thirty years later, in the "French-American Blind Judgment Semifinals" in 2006, France once again lost completely.
The results of this blind tasting shocked the entire wine world, and news reports about it were overwhelming in the United States. Regardless of whether people agree with the judges' scores, it is still a major moment in the history of wine. Before this blind tasting, French wines were unrivaled. Afterwards, wine lovers realized that they can find wines from all over the world, not just in France. Perhaps this is the biggest story of the Judgment of Paris meaning.
Paris Wine Tasting of 1976 or the Judgement of Paris is recorded in history as a historic event in the wine industry! It always reminds the world that wine is always changing. In the world of wine, no one is always the king. This is the case in all walks of life. Let's encourage each other!
